The Ancient And Celebrated History Of Drums
The use of the drum goes a long distance back in our world’s history. People used drums to produce sounds as far back as 6000 B.C. In these old cultures, like the Aztecs, Incas, and Mayas, the drum was a big part of society and was played during festivals and other events and gatherings. Drums were discovered in many mountains of these ancient burial areas by scientists and discoverers.
Many believe that it is the barrel of the drum that makes the sound that is unique to the drum. But, it is not; it is the pulled out fabric over the top, sometimes referred to as the membrane, that produces the sound. The sound is triggered by impact from a stick or other object. When the drum is hit, the membrane vibrates and the sound is reverberated throughout the instrument. The Indians actually used real wooden sticks to generate this sound during rituals and festivities.
In the 20th century, this instrument started to be further developed, and in time, the drum set came to music. A drum set includes: a tom-tom, cymbals, snare drums, and bass drums (one of which has a foot pedal to smash it with. Other tone-type instruments like bells, chimes, and wood blocks were included in the arsenal of instruments to produce even more sounds to add to the overall melody of a song. These collections were popular in the 30′s up to the 50′s, then drum kits such as the ones described above were a vital component of musical groups. You were not a rock band if you were without drums.
Like many other types of media and sensory objects, drums became digitized for further manipulation. Digital instruments, such as keyboards, synthesizers, and drum machines allow for the individual to fabricate their own beats. These sounds put together with synthesizers were unique and could not be produced from a physical set of drums. Therefore, modern music employed these devices for such reasons.
Drums were not always used for tunes. In fact, people of other continents used to play them to send communications. A series of hits would signal something that others in the tribe can know the meaning of. Drums further stood as a symbol of spirit for Indians of the Americas, as well as people all over the world. Most thought of the drum as a male and give them as a gift to teen boys becoming men.
The drum beats bass like no other. Drums have been played in different types of music, such as: rock and roll, funk, country, classical music, and other music groups. Next time you attend a concert of any kind, look on the stage and you will notice a drum or group of drums of a number of different styles. These instruments are great for percussion and bass; because of this, drums are adaptable to any music situation and can be included with any kind of music.
