Strategies On Financing Films
This past weekend, L.A. entertainment lawyer Akua Boyenne opened the Los Angeles Women’s International Film Festival with a rousing and informative talk on how to finance independent films. Her talk was intended to educate and empower her audience by teaching them how to finance their films.
She playfully began her talk by saying, “I’m not here to entertain you. I’m not gonna sing and dance. With these words, Boyenne playfully charged her audience to join her in a high energy journey for more information on strategic options in creative film financing. “My intention today,” she said, “is to both educate you and empower you. She spoke like a lawyer winning over a jury, proceeding to rally those in attendance to listen to her case.
Boyenne outlined numerous issues of importance to today’s filmmakers. The topics included the raising of private equity and related considerations with investor financing, an in-depth look at state tax incentives for filmmakers, various ways to monetize a film’s pre-sales and useful strategies to maximize crowd funding. The audience was both enthusiastically taking notes, and actively participating with Boyenne’s direction in role-playing scenarios, acting out the parts of filmmakers, sales agents and foreign sales distributors in an effort to better understand the dynamics of film financing.
Her engaging way of running the workshop seemed to have a great influence on those who were in attendance. Afterwards, Michelle, an aspiring filmmaker living in Los Angeles said, “I believe Akua’s presentation filled me with a strong appreciation for the many different solutions for someone like me looking to find financing for my projects.” She also said, “We really enjoyed her interactive discourse and her way of relaying the information.”
