Selecting New Pickups For Your Guitar
The harmonious and beautiful squeal of electric guitars was the biggest contribution to rock and roll. Back in the 50′s, this sound was being experimented with and then in the 60′s and 70′s, that style was improved upon until it transformed into rock and roll. The crispness of sound that comes flowing from an electric guitar is amazing. It is amazing to wonder where music would be today if it hadn’t been for the improvement upon the electric guitar; horrible to think of. A band that doesn’t have an electric guitar is like a kid without its mama.
Electric guitars come in different contours, sizes, colors, and designs. Some think that it does not matter what electric guitar that is used because they all sound the same. This is simply not true; brand, size, pickups, and neck all make a difference in the sound that spews from the guitar. So, certain brands of electric guitars have been the choice for decades because of the quality. But, the biggest contributor to the sound type is the pickups.
Whether starting a brand new band, jamming solo, or adding instruments to your band’s collection, you should become aware of the different kinds of pickups on electric guitars before you decide on one. Many music stores will let you you testing them and can be very helpful in providing information and assisting one in buying the most suitable electric guitar. Make sure to learn about the various pickup arrangements. Thekinds of pickups for electric guitars are:
* Single Coil Pickups – This style has a single wire and coil. This type is the oldest of electric guitar arrangements. When strumming on single coil pickup, the sound is affected by other frequencies in the air which create a hum with the music. These types of pickups are rarely seen today but still used by some very well known artists because of the blues-like sound they produce.
* Humbucker Pickups – This type of pickup is made from two coils so the unwanted hum of the single coil pickup is killed. Basically, the coil carries two signals: one that the guitar is producing and one that eliminates the hum. The actual piece that does this is called a Humbucker which was patented in 1954. The humbucker is basically the arrangement of two coils.
* Double Coil Pickups – arrangement of pickups, like the name, consist of two coils. Though, for one reason, guitarists do want the hum sound once in a while so the double coil pickup electric guitars are usually made with a switch that can cancel the second coil.
There are things that go into the sound an electric guitar provides. Though, pickups are the single most important part of the electric guitar. Other parts such as: neck length, shape, material, frets, and tuners make a difference too but not like the pickups. For years, rock stars have been trying new things in hopes to finding the perfect guitar to make the optimal sound. Rock and roll has gotten different some ways but in different ways it has remained indifferent.
