Secrets to Singing: Know Your Range
If you are an aspiring singer, there are essential things about singing that you need to know. This article intends to discuss one of the basic things and that is, vocal range. There is much debate about what vocal range is. Read and learn for yourself about it and begin your road to fulfilling your dreams.
Understand first that your voice is produced because of the flapping and vibrating of your vocal chords or vocal folds. These chords or folds are tissues found in your larynx. They vibrate and flap when air flows through them as you breathe out. Your voice is your instrument. In fact, it is considered to be the most intricate musical instrument ever.
The size of vocal chords vary from person to person that’s why people have differently pitched voices. Males usually have thicker vocal folds and subsequently produce a thicker and lower pitched voice. On the other hand, women have thinner vocal folds that produce a higher pitch. These different pitches of voices when categorized are called vocal ranges.
Varying vocal pitches are grouped and categorized into three basic vocal ranges. These are arranged in the order of highest pitch to lowest pitch. They are:
1. Soprano
2. Mezzo-Soprano
3. Alto
4. Tenor
5. Baritone
6. Bass
The first three vocal ranges (Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, and Alto) are usually female vocal ranges. I say “usually” because there are a number of men who can sing naturally in these ranges.
In the same way, there are rare cases of females who can sing in the low pitches of the last three vocal ranges that are normally meant for men.
You need to know your range so that you can learn to sing within it. Singing within your range helps you avoid straining which can damage your vocal chords.
Good practice and training can improve and widen your range. I used to sing very low before but because of practice and experience, I can now sing effortlessly in a tenor range and sometimes can sing as high as an alto pitch.
