Has your child caught the music bug yet? If your kids are as lucky as I was growing up than you are more than willing to support your child’s musical pursuits.

But how do you know which instrument to choose? Do you go with the one their friends are playing? What if they want to play the bass but they are so tiny? Follow these tips to learn how to best choose an instrument for your child.

Think About The Expense

School band, orchestra or even choir can be cheap (maybe even free). It will depend on your school and their budget but this is how I got started.

If you have to take classes outside of school, maybe to supplement the learning, consider how much a private teacher would be. Most charge by the half hour and can be very expensive. Consider group classes versus private tutoring to save money.

It is also important to consider the cost of actually renting the instrument. Renting a flute is much different than renting a set of drums. There is no point in spending money that you don’t have. Plan long term and your child will always have something to play.

Consider Interest

When we say interest, whose are we talking about? Both you and your child’s interest. If you can’t stand the sound of a piano being played incorrectly, probably not a good idea to have your 6 year old taking lessons.

On the other hand, if you enjoy the instrument yourself, your excitement could actually contribute to the success of your child. Think support system.

Expose Your Child To Different Music

I went through a million different instruments during my time in music. Mostly because every year I seemed to discover a new type of music. Jazz trumpet sounds very different than Bach violin.

Show your child as many different possibilities as possible and let them decide. They are the ones who are going to be doing the practicing after all! The “cooler” they think their instrument is, the more likely they will be to practice and improve.

Go To The Music Store

This is the end all way to find out which instrument your child should play. Take them to a music store and let them run free. If they just stand in the middle of the store and don’t do anything, then maybe you should consider signing them up for soccer after all.

They will probably gravitate to the instrument that they want to play the most. This is valuable information that you can use to weigh against the other points. After all, it is all about the children.
